St Nicholas CofE Academy are currently seeking a Foundation Governor to support the management of the school and enable the school to run as effectively as possible.  Governors work alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children.  Being a school governor is a commitment to attending local governing body meetings which consider issues such as setting the school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. Governors are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the headteacher and senior leaders. Governors bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to the governing board and schools benefit greatly from working with skilled volunteers, for example anyone with experience of finance, law, premises management or human resources. A governor with business know-how can transform the running of a school.


Academy governors have the following responsibilities:

  • To support the work of the Diocese of Coventry Multi Academy Trust.

  • To have strategic oversight of the school, to monitor pupil achievement and attainment, to oversee the quality of teaching and learning, to review staffing patterns and to oversee finances.

  • To challenge and support the school and its staff in its pursuit of excellence and continual improvement.

  • To develop a detailed knowledge of the school community as a whole through focused visits.

  • To be supportive of the school, its Head Teacher and staff.

  • To attend meetings of the LGB and any committees that they are appointed to.


Foundation Governors have specific additional responsibilities:

  • Preserving the links between Church, School and Diocese.

  • Taking an active role in the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) process.

  • Ensure that collective worship and religious education at the school follow the appropriate syllabus and are effectively monitored.

  • Ensure that the Christian ethos of the school is encouraged throughout its community and is reflected in its policies and protocols, the curriculum and activities.

  • Report formally or informally to the PCC/deanery once a year about the church school.

  • Ensure that their own attitudes and behaviour in relation to the school reflect its Christian ethos.

Personal qualities of a governor:

  • Integrity and good interpersonal skills.

  • A genuine interest in and enthusiasm for education.

  • A willingness and capacity to serve for four years.

  • A willingness and capacity to learn.

  • Transferrable skills such as finance, HR, legal skills or health and safety expertise to complement the skills of other governors.


Being a school governor is a chance to experience leadership at board level at any point in one’s career. The role provides individuals with the opportunity to develop and hone skills such as negotiation, influencing and teamwork. Volunteers need to be dedicated people who care about improving education, but they do not need prior board experience. It makes the role perfect for professionals looking to improve their business and leadership skills, give back to society and enhance children’s futures.
